Week 2 Super Lig Recap: Galatasaray, Besiktas, and Trabzonspor Results

Updates from the Turkish Super Lig, including match results, highlights, and analysis from Week 2.

Galatasaray kicked off their season with a convincing 3-0 win over newly-promoted Karagumruk, despite not showcasing their best form. This victory marks a strong start for the three-time defending Super Lig champions. Victor Osimhen and Mauro Icardi, Galatasaray's formidable attacking duo, are back in action and making their presence felt. Osimhen has been on a stellar run, scoring crucial goals, including a gorgeous finish in the derby against Besiktas, and has hinted at staying with Galatasaray beyond the winter transfer window.

Meanwhile, Fenerbahce had a disappointing start to their season, settling for a goalless draw. This result contrasts with Galatasaray's comfortable win, potentially widening the gap between the two title contenders. Besiktas, on the other hand, managed to snatch a win with a last-gasp strike, showcasing their determination to compete in the title race.

Recent Standout Performances:

  • Victor Osimhen: The Nigerian striker has scored 24 league goals for Galatasaray, making him the Super Lig's top goalscorer. He's been electric since his record-breaking move to Turkey and has formed a brilliant partnership with Mauro Icardi.
  • Mauro Icardi: The Argentine striker has combined with Osimhen for an impressive total of 11 goals in just 10 Super Lig games this season.

Then, the moment of the game. After 281 days out after suffering a ligament injury, club icon and captain Mauro Icardi was brought on, much to the delight of the home fans.

And to cap things off, the Argentine scored on his return, putting the ball into an open net after some really unselfish play from Lucas Torreira. He soaked in the applause of a euphoric fan base.

A bit complacent at times, Galatasaray clinched the win to make it two from two to start the season. Osimhen and Icardi are back, and the vibes are sky-high around the club. A lot of reasons to be positive for supporters

Fenerbahce struggled to create scoring opportunities throughout the match, failing to capitalize on a man advantage after a Goztepe red card between the 61st and 85th minutes. The numerical advantage was short-lived, as Jayden Oosterwolde was sent off with five minutes remaining, leveling the playing field.

Despite the setback, Fenerbahce had a golden chance to win in added time when Anderson Talisca stepped up to take a penalty. However, the spot kick was saved, forcing Fenerbahce to settle for a goalless draw.

Fenerbahce's uninspiring performance under José Mourinho's leadership has been a recurring theme, with the team struggling to find scoring opportunities and lacking creativity. The fact that Anderson Talisca's penalty was their only shot on target in the entire game highlights the issue. Despite having two promising strikers in Jhon Duran and Youssef En-Nesyri, neither player had a significant impact on the match.

With Galatasaray starting the season strongly, Fenerbahce can't afford to drop points if they want to keep pace. The title challenge may be impacted if they can't find a way to improve their scoring form.

Besiktas' Narrow Escape

Besiktas were on the brink of dropping points in their season opener, but Rafa Silva's late strike salvaged a win for the team against Eyupspor. Tammy Abraham had given Besiktas the lead with a penalty on his Super Lig debut, only for Mame Thiam to equalize soon after. Silva's decisive goal ensured Besiktas started the season with a win.

Besiktas dominated the match, but struggled to find the winning goal despite their relentless attacks. The final 10 minutes saw them commit all their players forward in a desperate bid for victory. Fortunately, Rafa Silva stepped up and scored the decisive goal in the 96th minute, expertly spinning his defender before unleashing a powerful shot into the net to seal a 2-1 win for Besiktas.

The goal was crucial for Besiktas, especially with the spotlight on head coach Ola Gunnar Solskjaer following a disappointing end to last season and a humiliating loss to Shakhtar Donetsk in the Europa League qualifier. A poor result would have put him under immediate pressure.

Meanwhile, Trabzonspor continued their winning streak with a narrow 1-0 victory over Kasimpasa, marking their second consecutive win.

Trabzonspor's 1-0 win, much like their opener, was far from impressive. The team showed a lack of quality and cohesion in the final third, leaving coach Fatih Tekke room for concern and opportunities to work on improving the team's performance.
