Tommy Paul dominated Elmer Moller in the US Open first round, winning 6-3, 6-3, 6-1 on Tuesday night at Louis Armstrong Stadium. This marks the fourth consecutive year Paul has advanced beyond the opening round. Their previous encounter was at Wimbledon, where Paul also emerged victorious.

Mollwer's aggressive approach in the second set ultimately proved costly, as he struggled to produce winners and paid the price for his bold shots. Meanwhile, Paul demonstrated remarkable resilience, chasing down nearly every shot that came her way and capitalizing on Mollwer's mistakes.

Mollwer's two-handed backhand, typically a strength, failed to deliver in the match. This weakness was seized upon by Paul, who used it to her advantage and secure crucial breaks in the second set. Paul broke Mollwer in the first game and again in the final game, ultimately taking the set 6-3.

Moller finished with no less than 12 double faults and with accurancy also missing in his ground strokes, the third set never became compettitive. 

Paul never took his foot off the pedal as he broke Moller twice to take it, 6-1, and cap a solid first-round appearance.

“I think parts of the game worked okay at the beginning, but Paul also played really well, I have to take my hat off to that. Overall, he played much better than me,” admitted Moller after the match. The Dane, however, enjoyed the atmosphere in the huge tennis-arena.

“I think it was a pretty cool atmosphere. Sometimes the sounds can be disturbing, and suddenly there was a metro train running, but it wasn't something that affected me negatively. I just think it was cool that there were so many people who created a good atmosphere.”
