World No. 1 Jannik Sinner kicked off his US Open title defense with a convincing 6-1, 6-1, 6-2 win over unseeded Czech player Vit Kopriva at Arthur Ashe Stadium. This impressive performance comes after Sinner's Cincinnati finale was cut short due to illness, but he seemed to have no issues this time around, delivering seven aces.

Sinner's recent health struggles haven't seemed to impact his game, as he expressed satisfaction with his current fitness level. “Very happy that I'm healthy again, that we did our best to be in the best possible shape here,” Sinner said, highlighting his team's efforts in preparing him for the tournament.

Recent Form and Rankings

  • Jannik Sinner: Current ATP ranking of 1, Elo score of 11480
  • Vit Kopriva: Current ATP ranking of 89, Elo score of 732

Italian tennis star Jannik Sinner showcased his exceptional skills in a recent match against Vit Kopriva at the US Open Men Singles. Sinner sprinted through the first set, winning the first five games with remarkable ease. He maintained his dominance, producing only a handful of unforced errors and successfully holding his serve.

Kopriva faced significant challenges throughout the match. In the second set, he slipped and fell while chasing a shot near the baseline, ultimately handing Sinner another break opportunity with a double fault on the next point. Despite a slight improvement in the third set, Kopriva couldn't capitalize on Sinner's nine unforced errors, as the Italian skillfully extinguished both break points he faced.

Jannik Sinner's US Open journey was a triumphant one, despite the controversy that surrounded him last year due to doping allegations. The crowd's warm reception was a testament to his resilience, and he sealed his victory with a stunning backhand winner that landed just inches within the line. “Feels great to be back here, obviously it's a very special tournament,” Sinner said, visibly relieved and happy to be competing again.

The Doping Controversy

Sinner had accepted a three-month suspension in February after testing positive for clostebol, a banned substance, during the Indian Wells Open in March 2024. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) had appealed the initial decision, which found Sinner not guilty of any fault or negligence. However, a settlement was reached, and Sinner served his suspension from February 9 to May 4, 2025. According to WADA, Sinner's exposure to clostebol was due to the negligence of his entourage, and although he didn't intend to cheat, he's still responsible for their actions.
