Lewandowski: I Almost Joined Manchester United in 2012
Robert Lewandowski shares his story of almost joining Manchester United and reflects on his successful career.
“I don't have this kind of feeling that I missed something, because every move or decision... I made because I wanted it...”
Robert Lewandowski, now a star player for Barcelona, revealed that he had agreed to join Manchester United in 2012 while he was still with Borussia Dortmund. The Polish striker was 24 years old at the time and had just helped Dortmund win consecutive Bundesliga titles under Jürgen Klopp. Lewandowski recalled receiving a call from Sir Alex Ferguson, expressing his interest in joining the Red Devils.
Lewandowski claimed that he gave Manchester United the green light to sign him, but Dortmund's president intervened, citing his importance to the team. “They could not sell me because they knew if I stayed, they could earn more money, and that I could wait maybe one or two more years,” Lewandowski explained. This decision allowed Dortmund to retain their star player, who would go on to score 64 goals in his final two seasons before joining Bayern Munich in 2014.
Lewandowski's Career Reflection
Despite missing out on a potential move to Manchester United, Lewandowski has enjoyed an illustrious career, winning 13 league titles and scoring over 600 goals. He doesn't regret his decision, stating, “I'm very happy with my career. I don't have this kind of feeling that I missed something, because every move or decision... I made because I wanted it.”
He recalled to BBC Sport: “To Manchester United I decided and said yes. I wanted to join Manchester United, to see Alex Ferguson.
“They (Dortmund) could not sell me,” Lewandowski added. “Because they knew if I stayed they could earn more money, and that I could wait maybe one or two more years.
“But it is true that I said yes to Manchester United.”
Robert Lewandowski, the renowned Barcelona striker, revealed that he had agreed to join Manchester United in 2012 while playing for Borussia Dortmund. However, Dortmund's management refused to let him go, and the transfer never materialized. Despite never playing in England, Lewandowski has enjoyed a highly successful career on the continent.

No Regrets
Lewandowski reflected on the what-ifs, saying, “Maybe it could be a regret (not to play in the Premier League).” Nevertheless, he seems content with his career path, having won numerous titles and broken records in the Bundesliga and beyond. Lewandowski's decision to stay with Dortmund ultimately led to his successful stint with Bayern Munich and later Barcelona.
“Maybe it could be a regret (not to play in the Premier League),” he said.
“But when I am looking back (having) played for Bayern Munich, Dortmund and now Barcelona, I have to say I am very happy with my career.
“I don't have this kind of feeling that I missed something, because every move or decision... I made because I wanted it.”
