Coco Gauff makes coaching change

Coco Gauff makes surprise coaching change ahead of US Open, hiring biomechanics expert Gavin MacMillan to help with serve issues. Check the latest tennis news.

Coco Gauff has parted ways with coach Matthew Daly just days before the U.S. Open. The 21-year-old world No. 3 will continue working with longtime coach Jean-Christophe Faurel and has brought in biomechanics specialist Gavin MacMillan. MacMillan previously worked with world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka, helping her improve her serve and forehand - an area Gauff has struggled with, committing 42 double faults in three matches at the Canadian Open.

Gauff was seen training with Faurel and MacMillan at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center in New York, ahead of her Thursday night exhibition match at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Her U.S. Open singles campaign begins on Sunday. Daly, known for his grip and footwork expertise, expressed positivity about his partnership with Gauff, saying he has “only good things to say and “enjoyed working with her.”

Some key points about Gauff's coaching team:

Current Coaches:

  • Jean-Christophe Faurel: Longtime coach who has been part of Gauff's team since her breakthrough 2019 campaign
  •  Gavin MacMillan: Biomechanics specialist who previously worked with Aryna Sabalenka

Former Coach:

  • Matthew Daly: Grip specialist who joined Gauff's team after her split with Brad Gilbert in 2024
  • Brad Gilbert: Legendary coach who worked with Gauff between 2023 and 2024

Gauff's recent performance has been inconsistent, with four singles victories since Paris and an early exit at Wimbledon. Her partnership with Daly yielded significant success, including winning the French Open and WTA Finals in 2024.

Under Daly and longtime coach Jean-Christophe Faurel, Gauff enjoyed a stellar run, winning the WTA 1000 China Open, the WTA Finals, and this year's French Open. However, her form has dipped since then, with only four singles wins and a first-round exit at Wimbledon.

Darren Cahill, Jannik Sinner's coach, believes MacMillan's expertise could be a game-changer for Gauff, saying their relationship “could be a really good one ”

Gauff is set to appear in a Thursday night exhibition match at Arthur Ashe Stadium before the U.S. Open main draw begins on Sunday. Despite her recent struggles, Gauff remains a strong contender, having won the U.S. Open in 2023. Her coaching team, now comprising Faurel and MacMillan, will be crucial in helping her regain her form and make a deep run in the tournament.
