Pulisic Fires Back at Critics: US Star Defends Decision to Skip Gold Cup

Christian Pulisic hits back at former US stars Landon Donovan and Alexi Lalas over criticism for skipping the Gold Cup. The US winger defends his decision, prioritizing rest ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

US winger Christian Pulisic defended his decision to skip the CONCACAF Gold Cup, saying critics questioning his commitment to the national team are “way out of line.” Pulisic, who had a grueling season with AC Milan, playing 50 games, chose to prioritize rest and recovery with the 2026 World Cup in mind. He believes this decision will ultimately benefit both him and the team.

Pulisic revealed he wanted to participate in friendlies against Turkey and Switzerland but was turned down by coach Mauricio Pochettino, who preferred to work with a single roster for continuity ahead of the Gold Cup. Pulisic respected the decision, choosing to focus on his own needs and prepare for the next season.

The USMNT star emphasized that his decision wasn't taken lightly, considering the team's prospects in the World Cup. “I don't regret my decision” he said, feeling positive about his choice to prioritize his body's needs and prepare for the World Cup. He expressed his enthusiasm to get back to training and work on aspects of his game.

US internationals Yunus Musah and Antonee Robinson will also miss the CONCACAF Gold Cup, joining Christian Pulisic in prioritizing rest over the tournament. Neither player is reported to be injured, with their decision likely driven by the desire to recharge ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Christian Pulisic expressed his disappointment with former US stars Landon Donovan and Alexi Lalas, who criticized players for skipping the Gold Cup. Pulisic said, “When it comes to those guys, it is tough because I looked up to those guys growing up, some of these guys were my idols, and I respect them so much as players.” Despite his admiration for them, Pulisic stood by his decision to prioritize rest and recovery ahead of the tournament.

“It's tough especially when some of them privately, the way they talk to me and clearly want to show support and be a friend and then they say something different publicly.

“Of all things, you can talk about my performances, but to question my commitment to the national team, in my opinion that's way out of line.”

The US national team suffered a significant setback, losing 4-0 to Switzerland in a friendly match, marking their fourth consecutive defeat. This result adds pressure ahead of the 2026 World Cup, which the US will co-host.
