Liverpool FC has announced the record-breaking signing of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen. The Germany midfielder joins the Premier League champions in a deal worth £116 million.

The transfer breaks the club's previous record and solidifies Wirtz's move to Anfield. The deal includes an upfront fee of £100 million and £16 million in potential add-ons.

This deal shatters Liverpool's previous record transfer, which was the signing of Darwin Núñez from Benfica in 2022.

The potential add-ons could also make it the highest transfer fee in British football history, surpassing Chelsea's £115 million signing of Moisés Caicedo in 2023.

“I feel very happy and very proud. Finally it’s done and I was waiting for a long time – finally it’s done and I am really happy,” Wirtz told Liverpool.com.

“I'm really excited to have a new adventure in front of me. This was also a big point of my thoughts: that I want to have something completely new, to go out of the Bundesliga and to join the Premier League.

“I will see how I can perform there. I hope I can do my best. I spoke also with some players who played there and they told me that it’s perfect for me and every pitch is perfect, you can enjoy every game. I’m really looking forward to playing my first game.”

Wirtz burst onto the scene at just 17, making his Leverkusen debut and rapidly evolving into a global superstar.

Last season, he had an incredible campaign, scoring 16 goals and providing 15 assists, helping Leverkusen secure a second-place finish in the Bundesliga and reach the Champions League last 16.

Wirtz played a pivotal role in Leverkusen's historic 2023/24 campaign under Xabi Alonso, helping the team win their first-ever Bundesliga title.

Wirtz had an outstanding season, contributing 18 goals and 20 assists in 49 appearances across all competitions, earning him the Bundesliga Player of the Season award.

He has also been a key player for Germany, earning 31 caps and scoring 7 goals since his international debut in 2021.

“I would like to win everything every year! First of all, we have to do our work, I have to make my work,” he added.

“In the end, we want to be successful. Last season they won the Premier League so my goal is for sure to win it again and also to go further in the Champions League. I’m really ambitious.”

Wirtz joins Liverpool as the Reds' second summer signing from Leverkusen, following the arrival of full-back Jeremie Frimpong.
