Tottenham Boss Ange Postecoglou Eyes Third Season Success

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou's future at the club remains uncertain despite winning the Europa League title. He jokes about his potential fate, referencing Seinfeld's George Costanza.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou expressed his desire to stay at the club but revealed he has had no discussions about his future. Postecoglou's side recently ended a 17-year trophy drought by winning the Europa League title, defeating Manchester City's rivals Manchester United 1-0, and securing a Champions League spot despite a turbulent Premier League campaign.

The Australian coach's future at Tottenham remains uncertain, with no talks held regarding contract extensions or long-term plans. Despite the Europa League win and Champions League qualification, Postecoglou's tenure has been marked by inconsistency in the Premier League, where Spurs currently sit 17th, raising questions about the club's direction and priorities.

Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou's Europa League win was vindication for his claim that he always wins trophies in his second season with a team. Despite this success, Postecoglou's future at the club remains uncertain. The 59-year-old Australian coach, who signed a four-year contract in June 2023, joked about his potential fate, saying: “Somebody rightly pointed out, sometimes they kill off the main character so I could be in strife there.” Postecoglou added that he had not spoken to Spurs chairman Daniel Levy about his future, despite promising fans that “season three is better than season two.”

“I'm not going to put a limit on what we can achieve but I certainly believe that it's exciting, the possibilities of next year knowing I've got a group of players now and staff and a club that knows what it takes to win.

“I haven't had any discussions with the club... maybe they were just waiting for clear air to give me some guidance, but I haven't heard anything from the club.”

When asked about his future at Tottenham, Ange Postecoglou seemed uncertain, saying he hadn't given it much thought. “I assume at some point somebody will tell me something,” he added with a hint of humor, joking that if not, he'd show up to work like George Costanza from Seinfeld, sitting at his desk and getting on with his job.

The club had just celebrated their Europa League win with a victory parade, but Postecoglou knows they must quickly shift focus to their upcoming Premier League match against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Despite the players looking worn out after their exuberant celebrations, Postecoglou was confident they'd field a team against Brighton. He emphasized the importance of celebrating their achievement, saying: “As I've got older, and I used to be a bit different, but I really feel you need to celebrate your achievements properly and that was kind of my message to the boys.” Postecoglou's words reflected his approach to balancing hard work with enjoying success.

“It's really important because once they've achieved it and they've done it in a very difficult way, it's important for the people around them because then they can relax and enjoy it as well.

“And it's important to make the experience as memorable as possible so that when I ask them to climb the mountain again, there's a reason for it.

“Fair to say they took my words literally and certainly enjoyed themselves over the last couple of days and, like all parties, there's always one family member that embarrasses you and you want to keep control of... we had a couple of those!”
