PGA Championship Delayed: Severe Weather Forces Third Round Suspension

Severe weather forces delay in PGA Championship third round at Quail Hollow Club, with top players like Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele affected.

The PGA Championship's third round at Quail Hollow Club was delayed due to severe weather conditions. The delay occurred just as top players like Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele were about to tee off, with McIlroy visibly frustrated as he turned back after heading to the first tee. The first pairing, consisting of Americans Sam Burns and Max Greyserman, hadn't even started their round when the horn sounded, signaling players to seek shelter immediately.

The delay is expected to last around 3.5 hours, with play set to resume at 11:43 a.m. local time. To make up for lost time, players will tee off from both the first and 10th holes in groups of three. According to the forecast, the severe thunderstorms should weaken by mid-morning, giving way to partly cloudy skies and steady breezes of 14-18 mph in the afternoon.

World number two Rory McIlroy and third-ranked Xander Schauffele were set to tee off at 8:25 a.m. but were forced to seek shelter due to the weather delay. Both players had walked from the practice area to the first tee when the horn sounded, signaling the suspension of play.

Rory McIlroy and Xander Schauffele both had a tough time on Friday, barely scraping through to make the cut with a score of one-over par 143. McIlroy, a four-time Quail Hollow winner, now finds himself nine strokes behind the leader, Jhonattan Vegas.

Vegas is currently dominating the leaderboard with an impressive eight-under par 134. He was initially set to tee off in the final pairing alongside Matthieu Pavon, but due to the weather delay, the pairings have been adjusted. Matthieu Pavon is tied for second place with South Korean Kim Si-woo and England's Matthew Fitzpatrick, both sitting at six-under par 136.
