Liverpool Celebrations Marred by Car Incident

Chaos erupted during Liverpool's title parade when a car ploughed into fans, injuring several people. Police are investigating the circumstances.

A car crashed into a large crowd of Liverpool fans in the city centre during the team's Premier League title celebrations on Monday, with videos online showing the chaotic scene. Merseyside police reported that a “number of pedestrians” were hit by the vehicle.

The incident occurred as the team was celebrating its title win with an open-top coach parade through the city centre, carrying players and coaching staff. A man has been detained by police in connection with the incident.

Unverified social media videos captured a car speeding into fans gathered along the street, with people seen lying on the road afterward. Following the incident, police quickly surrounded the vehicle, while other videos showed enraged fans trying to reach the driver. A Reuters photographer witnessed emergency responders carrying injured individuals on stretchers to ambulances, with debris scattered across the road and a tent set up at the scene.

“We would ask people not to speculate on the circumstances surrounding tonight's incident,” the police stated, emphasizing that “extensive enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances leading up to the collision.” Authorities are working to determine the details surrounding the event.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the incident, describing the scenes as “appalling.” He added that he was being kept updated on the situation and expressed his thoughts with those injured or affected. “My thoughts are with all those injured or affected. I want to thank the police and emergency services for their swift and ongoing response to this shocking incident,” Starmer stated on social media.

Liverpool FC released a statement saying they were in direct contact with the police regarding the incident. “Our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been affected by this serious incident,” the club said, expressing their concern for those impacted.
