Johnson's exemption from the PGA Championship, which was granted due to his 2020 Masters win, had expired. However, the PGA of America reserved the right to invite additional players who didn't meet the standard eligibility criteria, extending a special invite to Johnson. Other notable LIV Golf players in the field include Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm, Sergio Garcia, Tyrrell Hatton, Brooks Koepka, Patrick Reed, Cameron Smith, and Joaquin Niemann.

With this special invitation, Johnson will be among 16 LIV members competing in the 156-player field for the PGA Championship, scheduled from May 15-18. Notably, Johnson has come close to winning the PGA Championship in the past, finishing second in 2019 and tied for second in 2020.
