Baltimore Orioles Part Ways with Manager Brandon Hyde Amid Struggles

The Baltimore Orioles part ways with manager Brandon Hyde, citing poor performance and a 15-28 record early in the season.

The Baltimore Orioles parted ways with manager Brandon Hyde on Saturday, prior to their 10-6 loss to the Washington Nationals. Hyde's tenure as manager came to an end after a disappointing start to the season.

In addition to Hyde's departure, the Orioles also fired fielding coordinator and catching instructor Tim Cossins. Third base coach Tom Mansolino will take over as interim manager, leading the team in the short term.

Interim manager Tom Mansolino expressed his sentiments about Hyde's departure in a post-game interview, saying, “This isn't good for any of us. We're going to miss Brandon in a lot of ways.”

The Baltimore Orioles' decision to fire Hyde came after a disappointing 15-28 start to the season, which left them with the second-worst record in the American League, ahead of only the Chicago White Sox (14-32). The team had high expectations entering the season, particularly after the New York Yankees suffered major injuries to their starting rotation.

The Baltimore Orioles, who were expected to represent the American League in the World Series after the New York Yankees' starting rotation suffered major injuries, had a disappointing season under manager Brandon Hyde, going 15-28 before their 10-6 loss on Saturday. This record puts them second-worst in the AL, behind the Chicago White Sox (14-32), and fourth-worst in the league overall.

The Orioles' struggles were fueled by poor pitching, with the team boasting the third-worst earned run average (5.33), fourth-fewest strikeouts (323), and the fifth-most hits allowed (399) in the league before Saturday's loss.

Under Hyde, the Orioles' offense struggled, ranking 25th in batting average (.230), 27th in walks (124), and 25th in runs scored (159) and stolen bases (24). They also ranked poorly in doubles (tied 27th with 57) and on-base percentage (tied 26th at .299). The team struck out at a high rate, ranking third in strikeout percentage (24.3%).

The Orioles have had a dismal season overall, winning only two series so far. As they enter the back end of May, they're on the verge of being swept in consecutive series, further exacerbating their struggles.

Hyde's Tenure with the Orioles
Under Brandon Hyde's leadership, the Baltimore Orioles compiled a 421-492 regular-season record, marked by three winning seasons and four losing seasons. Their postseason performance was winless, going 0-5. Despite winning the AL Manager of the Year award in 2023 after a 101-win season, Hyde also oversaw a 110-loss campaign in 2021. After appearing poised to contend for a title, the Orioles have regressed to a state reminiscent of their rebuild four years ago.
