A judge has declared a mistrial in the case of five former members of Canada's world junior ice hockey team accused of sexually assaulting a woman in a hotel in 2018. The announcement was made by Superior Court Justice Maria Carroccia on Friday.

The mistrial was declared just two days after the trial had begun, and the jurors were subsequently discharged.

The five former Canadian junior ice hockey team members - Michael McLeod, Dillon Dube, Cal Foote, Carter Hart, and Alex Formenton - face charges of sexual assault stemming from a 2018 hotel incident. McLeod also faces an additional count of being a party to an offence. All players have pleaded not guilty.

The incident allegedly occurred in June 2018 at a hotel in London, Canada, following a Hockey Canada gala celebrating the team's world junior championship win earlier that year. Due to the mistrial, a new trial will be held, with jury selection set to begin on Friday.
