Atletico Madrid Boss Simeone Confident of Turning Season Around
Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone remains optimistic about his team's LaLiga title chances, despite a dismal run of form and fears of a fourth consecutive trophyless season.
Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone remains optimistic about his team's chances of competing for the LaLiga title, despite a dismal run of form that has seen them lose ground to rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid. Atletico's recent struggles have resulted in their exit from the Champions League and Copa del Rey.
Currently sitting third in the LaLiga standings with 57 points, Atletico trail leaders Barcelona by nine points and Real Madrid by six points, with nine games remaining in the season. Their upcoming match against mid-table Sevilla on Sunday presents an opportunity for Atletico to regain momentum in the league. Simeone emphasized the importance of focusing on LaLiga, stating, “The team is working well, the focus is now on LaLiga and we have to compete until the end in the best way.”
When questioned about Atletico's ability to contend for the title, Simeone expressed confidence in his team, simply saying, “Yes.” This response reflects his determination to push for the top spot in LaLiga, despite the challenges they have faced recently. Atletico's 1-1 draw at 15th-placed Espanyol extended their winless run to three league games, making their upcoming matches crucial in their pursuit of the title.
With fans concerned about the possibility of a fourth consecutive trophyless season, Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone remains optimistic about his team's growth and the legacy they are building. Simeone, who has been at the helm of Atletico since 2011, emphasized the importance of continuous improvement, saying, “Since I arrived at Atletico, I’ve always pursued pure growth, and I believe there's still a lot of room for it. What used to be 'hopes and maybes' are now real possibilities.”

Simeone also highlighted the significance of the legacy he and his team are creating at Atletico Madrid. Having guided the team to two LaLiga titles, including the 2020-21 season, as well as two Europa League trophies, Simeone expressed pride in his team's accomplishments. “But the most important thing is the legacy we're leaving,” he said. Simeone also praised his players, stating, “We compete very well against Real Madrid and Barcelona. I told the players the other day - I'm proud of them for the legacy they're leaving. The beauty lies in walking that path.”
Despite the team's recent struggles, Simeone acknowledged that his players have been performing well, even if the results haven't reflected that. He warned that their upcoming match against Sevilla will be challenging, saying, “The players have been playing well even though they haven't gotten results, so Sevilla will be a difficult match.” Ahead of the match, Atletico confirmed that midfielder Rodrigo De Paul and winger Samuel Lino will likely miss the game due to low-grade muscle injuries.
In a positive update, Simeone announced that midfielder Koke could return to the side against Sevilla after a nine-game absence due to a muscle injury. This potential return could provide a boost to Atletico's midfield as they seek to regain momentum in LaLiga.
