Serie A recap: Atalanta dominates but fails to score in draw with Venezia, remaining two points behind Inter.

Atalanta's Series A title aspirations suffered a setback as they were held to a goalless draw by struggling Venezza, leaving them winless in five home games across all competitions.

With Inter Milan and Napoli set to face off later, Atalanta knew nothing but a win would suffice to apply pressure on their title rivals. However, Gian Piero Gasperini's side got off to a sluggish start in a scrappy encounter.

The first scoring opportunity didn't arrive until the 20th minute, when Ademola Lookman showcased his quick feet to create space in the box, only to fire into the side netting.

Lookman continued to pose a threat, delivering a cross that found Mateo Retegui unmarked, but the striker inexplicably headed over the bar. Retegui, the current top scorer in Serie A, had an off-day in front of goal, heading wide again just before the half-hour mark.

Venezia barely ventured into Atalanta's half in the first period, with the hosts dominating proceedings. Despite their dominance, Atalanta struggled to find the breakthrough, with Davide Zappacosta's curling effort clipping the far post.

The woodwork proved to be Atalanta's nemesis, as Juan Cuadrado's shot cannoned off the post just before half-time, ensuring the game remained goalless at the interval.

After the break, Atalanta resumed their relentless pursuit of the opening goal, relentlessly testing the Venezia defense. Cuadrado's pinpoint delivery found Retegui in ample space, but the striker's frustrating afternoon persisted as he blasted his effort over the bar.

Charles De Ketelaere was the next to attempt to breach the Venezia goal, latching onto Lookman's cutback only to fire directly at former Inter goalkeeper Ionuț Radu. In a rare foray forward, Venezia's Mirko Maric came agonizingly close to scoring, his shot from the edge of the box whizzing inches wide of the post.

Despite crafting a multitude of scoring opportunities, Atalanta ultimately failed to find the back of the net, leaving them two points adrift of Inter in third place. Venezia, meanwhile, earned a crucial point in their quest for safety, despite remaining winless in their last 10 outings, with five draws and five defeats.
