LaLiga: Girona Snap Winless Streak with 2-1 Victory Over Las Palmas

Girona ended their four-match winless streak with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Las Palmas, thanks to goals from Abel Ruiz and Yaser Asprilla, boosting their LaLiga European qualification hopes.

Girona returned to winning ways with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Las Palmas at Estadi Montilivi, courtesy of goals from Abel Ruiz and Yaser Asprilla. This win moved the Blanquivermells to within a single point of the LaLiga European qualification places, revitalizing their hopes of securing a spot in continental competition.

Both teams were eager to break their respective four-match winless streaks, and the match began at a frantic pace. Girona struck the first blow in the eighth minute, as Yangel Herrera's expertly weighted through ball released Ruiz, who curled a precise shot past the advancing Jasper Cillessen to score his first goal of 2025.

Despite Ruiz's opener, the first half-hour saw only one shot on target. However, Girona continued to create scoring opportunities, with Bryan Gil's acrobatic half-volley forcing Cillessen into an impressive save, tipping the ball past the post. As the half drew to a close, Girona were awarded a penalty when Scott McKenna was penalized for elbowing Herrera inside the penalty area.

Ruiz stepped up to take the penalty but was denied his second goal of the evening by Cillessen's spectacular full-stretch save. The Las Palmas goalkeeper's heroics kept his team in the contest, setting the stage for a tense second half. Ultimately, Yaser Asprilla's winner secured the three points for Girona, extending their unbeaten home run against Las Palmas to six consecutive matches.

Las Palmas faced an uphill battle in their bid to mount a comeback, particularly given their dismal away form in front of goal. The Canarian side had not scored an away goal in La Liga since November, making their task even more daunting.

However, Alberto Moleiro was determined to end Las Palmas' away goal drought. The lively midfielder forced Paulo Gazzaniga into a low save with a curling strike and later poked the ball over the crossbar from Fabio Silva's cutback. Despite Moleiro's efforts, Las Palmas struggled to find the equalizer.

Girona eventually sealed the victory through Yaser Asprilla's powerful strike into the bottom corner with 10 minutes remaining. The goal seemed to have wrapped up the three points for Girona, but Las Palmas gave them a late scare as Fabio Silva bundled in his sixth away goal of the campaign from Mika Marmol's pass.

The Estadi Montilivi erupted in relief when the full-time whistle blew, confirming Girona's first home victory of the year in all competitions. Meanwhile, Las Palmas' struggles continued, leaving them just two points above the relegation zone after another disappointing defeat.
