LaLiga: Atletico Madrid Bounce Back with 2-0 Win Over Mallorca

Atletico Madrid returned to winning ways with a 2-0 victory over Mallorca, thanks to goals from Samuel Lino and Antoine Griezmann, closing the gap on LaLiga leaders Real Madrid to just one point.

Atletico Madrid rebounded from their recent setback, securing a 2-0 victory over visiting Mallorca in LaLiga. This win capped off a strong week for the team, as they extended their impressive run to just one defeat in 20 games across all competitions, with 18 wins and one draw.

The match at the Metropolitano began slowly, with both teams struggling to create scoring opportunities in the opening 15 minutes. The first genuine chance arrived in the 20th minute, when Alexander Sorloth managed to find space in the box. However, his powerful effort was saved by Dominik Greif at the near post, preventing Mallorca from taking an early lead.

Following Sorloth's chance, Atletico Madrid began to assert their dominance over the contest. They broke the deadlock in the 26th minute, courtesy of a well-crafted goal. Giuliano Simeone won the ball in the Mallorca half and drove through the defense before picking out Samuel Lino, who was left unmarked. Lino took a touch and then unleashed a powerful shot into the far corner, scoring for the second consecutive league match.

Mallorca's attacking endeavors were virtually nonexistent in the first half, as evidenced by their failure to register a single shot on target before the break. Atletico Madrid, on the other hand, had opportunities to extend their lead, with Julian Alvarez's inviting cross into the box being met by Giuliano Simeone, whose effort was miraculously kept out by Dominik Greif.

The second half began in a similar vein to the first, with neither team able to assert dominance. Although Diego Simeone's men enjoyed a slight edge in possession, they struggled to break down a resolute Mallorca defense. It wasn't until after the hour mark that Mallorca began to push forward, sensing an opportunity to snatch a draw against one of LaLiga's top teams.

Mallorca's first genuine threat came on 70 minutes, when Sergi Darder's clever free-kick deceived Jan Oblak, who was expecting a cross. However, the Slovenian goalkeeper managed to tip the ball over the bar, denying Mallorca a potential equalizer. Atletico Madrid, meanwhile, remained patient in their pursuit of a second goal, but Alexander Sorloth headed over from an unmarked position in the box, while Pablo Barrios volleyed a sublime effort over from the edge of the box.

As the match drew to a close, Rodrigo Riquelme struck the crossbar, but Atletico Madrid's misses ultimately proved inconsequential. In stoppage time, Antoine Griezmann sealed the win with a sensational chip, racing through the Mallorca defense to put the contest to bed. The victory applies pressure on LaLiga leaders and city rivals Real Madrid, reducing the gap to just one point ahead of Los Blancos' match against Espanyol. Mallorca, meanwhile, continues to struggle, having lost five consecutive matches in 2025 across all competitions.
