Swiatek vs Keys: Can American Pull Off Stunning Upset in Australian Open Semi-Finals?

Madison Keys faces a daunting task against Iga Swiatek in the Australian Open semi-finals, but the American is confident of pulling off an upset.

The Australian Open women's semi-finals are set to take place on Thursday at Melbourne Park, with two intriguing matchups on the cards. Paula Badosa, seeded 27th, and Madison Keys, seeded 29th, will aim to upset their higher-ranked opponents and prevent a dream final between two of the tournament's top contenders.

Aryna Sabalenka, 26, is on a mission to make history by becoming the first woman to achieve a 'three-peat' since Martina Hingis accomplished the feat from 1997 to 1999. Meanwhile, Iga Swiatek, 23, is seeking her first Australian Open title, which would add to her impressive collection of five Grand Slam crowns.

Friendship Put to the Test

Aryna Sabalenka and Paula Badosa will have to put their friendship aside when they meet on Rod Laver Arena in the Australian Open semi-finals. Badosa, the 11th-seeded Spanish player, has been in impressive form, dropping just one set so far at Melbourne Park, and will pose a significant challenge to Sabalenka's quest for a third consecutive title.

Badosa is enjoying a resurgence in form, having struggled with injuries, including a chronic back problem that threatened her career, which saw her drop out of the top 50. However, she has bounced back strongly and stunned American third seed Coco Gauff to advance to her first Grand Slam semi-final. Sabalenka, on the other hand, continued her relentless pursuit of a third straight Australian Open title, battling past Russian 27th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova 6-2 2-6 6-3.

Sabalenka and Badosa have a history, having met seven times previously, with Sabalenka winning five of those encounters, including their latest meeting at the third round of Roland-Garros last year. Badosa will now have the opportunity to avenge that heartbreak. Speaking about Sabalenka, Badosa said, “She is showing why she's the number one in the world right now. She's being very consistent, very aggressive. Very intense player. She's always a really tough one to face.”

Badosa is looking forward to the challenge of facing her friend and rival. “I faced her last year, but I think I was not in the form I am in now. If it is Aryna, I am really looking forward to that match,” she added. The stage is set for an intriguing semi-final showdown between two players who know each other well, both on and off the court.

Keys Faces Daunting Task Against Swiatek

Polish second seed Iga Swiatek holds a commanding 4-1 record over Madison Keys, and the American 19th seed is well aware that their upcoming encounter on Rod Laver Arena will be a challenging outing. At just 23 years old, Swiatek is the youngest player to reach seven Grand Slam semi-finals since Maria Sharapova at the 2006 U.S. Open, and she is looking ruthless in her pursuit of a place in the final for the first time at Melbourne Park, having not dropped a set in her run to the semis.

Despite the daunting task ahead, Keys can draw confidence from her impressive 10-match winning run as she targets a place in the Australian Open final on her third attempt, having also reached the semis in 2015 and 2022. Keys acknowledges the challenges of facing Swiatek, saying, “I think Iga is tough to beat because she has a lot of spin kind of naturally on both sides. She is a good server. She's a good returner. She moves incredibly well.” Keys also recognizes the importance of finding a balance between aggression and caution when facing Swiatek.

Keys elaborated on her strategy, saying, “I think it is really hard to ever really get ahead in a point. I think for most of us out here, you are not really going to try to out-defend Iga. So then there is just such a balance of being aggressive and trying to get her to move and going for things, but not pressing too hard and not going for anything too quickly.” With a clear understanding of the challenges ahead, Keys will look to execute her strategy effectively and pull off a stunning upset against the red-hot Swiatek.
