Danish international Albert Grønbæk has joined Southampton on loan from Rennes, seeking to revive his career after a difficult spell in France
Southampton has announced the loan signing of Danish international attacking midfielder Albert Grønbæk from French club Rennes, subject to international clearance. The 23-year-old, who has earned six caps for Denmark, will join the Premier League club for the remainder of the 2024/25 season, reportedly with a purchase option set at €15 million.
Grønbæk expressed his excitement about joining Southampton, praising the club's playing style and facilities. He stated, “I'm just so excited. It's a big club and I think the playing style is suiting me very well, so I'm just very pleased to be here.” The Danish international also marveled at the club's infrastructure, saying, “The facilities are very good and the stadium looks incredible. It's even bigger and better when you come in person, so I'm just so excited to play there. I'm proud to be here.”
Albert Grønbæk's Career Background and Rise to Prominence
Albert Grønbæk's professional career commenced with AGF Aarhus in Denmark, before he made a significant move to Bodø/Glimt in 2022. During his tenure with the Norwegian club, Grønbæk achieved remarkable success, securing two Norwegian league titles and scoring an impressive 30 goals in 87 appearances across all competitions, including the UEFA Europa League.

Grønbæk's outstanding form continued into the following season, with eight goals in 16 games, which ultimately led to his transfer to Rennes. The Danish international made his senior debut for Denmark in September and scored against Serbia in his second international appearance. Initially, Grønbæk's career at Rennes showed promise, but the club soon found itself in a prolonged slump, which persisted despite the managerial change from Julien Stéphan to Jorge Sampaoli.
