Rune Stages Epic Comeback to Reach Australian Open Fourth Round

Holger Rune produces incredible comeback to defeat Miomir Kecmanovic in five sets at the Australian Open, setting up a fourth-round clash with World No. 1 Jannik Sinner.

Holger Rune staged an incredible comeback to defeat Miomir Kecmanovic 6-7, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in a thrilling five-set match at the Australian Open. The 21-year-old Danish tennis player was on the brink of elimination, struggling to move around the court due to exhaustion, but he dug deep to secure a spot in the fourth round against World No. 1 Jannik Sinner.

Rune's remarkable turnaround was evident as he trailed 2-1 in sets and 2-4 in the fourth set, but he managed to summon the energy to win the next two sets and claim victory after more than three hours of play. This hard-fought win sets up a highly anticipated clash with Sinner, who Rune has faced four times previously, with each player winning two matches.

Reflecting on his incredible comeback, Rune revealed that he was not feeling well physically, particularly in the last two sets. “It was pure willpower. I really didn't feel well in my body. My legs hurt from the start of the fourth set, and at the end of the match, it was pure willpower,” Rune explained. Despite struggling with cramps in the fourth set, Rune's determination and mental toughness ultimately paid off.

Rune acknowledged that his movement around the court was not at its best, but he was proud of the effort he put in. “I gave everything I had in me. It wasn't the wildest legwork I had today, but I gave it what I had,” Rune said, highlighting the importance of mental resilience in securing the win.
