Postecoglou Faces Selection Headache as Spurs' Injury List Grows

Tottenham Hotspur's injury crisis has worsened with 14 players unavailable, leaving manager Ange Postecoglou with a severely depleted squad.

Tottenham Hotspur's injury crisis has worsened with midfielder Pape Matar Sarr becoming the latest addition to the list. Sarr suffered a knock during the team's 3-2 defeat to Everton over the weekend, leaving manager Ange Postecoglou with only 13 first-team players to choose from for Thursday's crucial Europa League match against Hoffenheim.

The injury list has heaped more pressure on Postecoglou, whose team has only managed two wins in their last eight games. The defeat to Everton was a significant setback, and the team's Europa League campaign is now hanging in the balance. Tottenham are currently ninth in the standings, and only the top eight teams qualify automatically for the knockout phase.

Postecoglou's options are further limited by the absence of keeper Antonin Kinsky, who is ineligible for the Europa League, and defenders Djed Spence and Sergio Reguilon, who are not registered for the competition. With the stakes high, Tottenham must find a way to overcome their injury woes and secure a positive result against Hoffenheim on Thursday to keep their Europa League hopes alive.

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur is available for selection again after recovering from a concussion, but manager Ange Postecoglou's options remain limited due to a lengthy injury list. A total of 14 players are currently unavailable, leaving Postecoglou with a severely depleted squad.

“The reality is we don't have a lot of choice,” Postecoglou told reporters. “I mean Pape's the latest of the guys who've been sort of grinding through for as long as they can. We've no other options, that's the basic premise of it. We've probably got 13 first-team players who've travelled. At the weekend we're hoping Pape on a quick turnaround, and potentially (Yves) Bissouma but everything else is further down the track.” Postecoglou acknowledged that he is reluctant to throw untested youngsters into the mix, saying, “We don't have many options, apart from throwing untried youngsters in there but again I don't want to do that to them.”

With a crucial Europa League match against Hoffenheim looming, Postecoglou is focusing on the immediate task at hand. “We'll try to focus on the next task, that's tomorrow night, get through that and assess it from there,” he said. Tottenham's Premier League form has been dismal, with only one win in their last 10 league games, leaving them 15th in the table. Sunday's home clash against Leicester City is a must-win game for Spurs.

Postecoglou has come under pressure due to the team's poor performances, but the club's hierarchy recognizes the significant impact of the injury crisis on the season. The manager pointed out that the Europa League schedule and a run to the League Cup semi-finals have further strained the squad. “You really need a strong squad of players and keep them healthy to cope with playing in Europe if you do well in the cup competitions like we have, because it's not manageable when you've got three games a week for the length of time we have,” Postecoglou explained.
