Gael Monfils has advanced to the 35th ATP final of his career, defeating American qualifier Nishesh Basavareddy in the Auckland Classic semifinals. The 38-year-old Frenchman's impressive victory has set him up for a potential 13th title.

Monfils' 7-6, 6-4 win over Basavareddy, who is half his age, showcases his enduring talent and athleticism. By reaching the final, Monfils has become the second-oldest men's singles finalist at any event since the ATP Tour began in 1990, a testament to his remarkable longevity in the sport.

Gael Monfils effectively capitalized on his opportunities to defeat 19-year-old Nishesh Basavareddy, converting his only break point of the match late in the second set to secure a 7-6, 6-4 victory.

Monfils expressed relief and happiness at reaching his 35th career final, which marks a strong start to his 21st year on tour. He acknowledged the impressive performance of his young opponent, saying, “I'm very happy. This kid has a bright future in front of him, he pushed me to the limit.” Monfils is now looking forward to the Australian Open in Melbourne, where he will face fellow Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in the first round.

The unseeded world number 52, Monfils, will face Zizou Bergs in Saturday's final after the Belgian upset Portuguese seventh seed Nuno Borges 6-2, 3-6, 7-5.
