LaLiga: Alaves Held to 1-1 Draw by Celta Vigo After Dominant First Half

Celta Vigo battled back to earn a 1-1 draw against Alaves in LaLiga, with Pablo Duran's second-half strike canceling out Kike Garcia's early penalty.

Deportivo Alaves squandered an opportunity to secure consecutive LaLiga victories for the first time this season, as Celta de Vigo staged a comeback to earn a 1-1 draw. This result halted Celta's run of successive league defeats, as well as their three-match losing streak in all competitions.

Eduardo Coudet's Celta de Vigo side was determined to put an end to their winless streak on the road, which had lasted for three games. Meanwhile, Alaves was seeking to secure their first victory at the Estadio Mendizorrotza under their new manager. Alaves was given a golden opportunity to take the lead early on when Fran Beltran handled the ball while attempting to clear a Carlos Vicente corner.

The referee, Francisco Maeso, awarded Alaves a penalty after consulting VAR, and Kike Garcia stepped up to convert the spot-kick in the fifth minute. This goal marked Garcia's fourth in just two matches, giving Alaves a promising start to the game.

Celta de Vigo dominated possession in the first half but struggled to create scoring opportunities. In fact, the only shot on goal in the entire first half was Kike Garcia's successful penalty kick for Alaves. The visitors' inability to threaten the Alaves goal left them facing a one-goal deficit at halftime.

The introduction of Williot Swedberg at halftime proved to be a turning point for Celta, as they began to pose a more significant threat to the Alaves goal. Just three minutes into the second half, Swedberg unleashed a 20-yard effort that forced Jesus Owono into a decent save. Shortly after, Sergio Carreira's clever volley sailed over Owono but landed on the roof of the net, denying Celta the equalizing goal.

Celta's persistence eventually paid off midway through the second half. A pass infield found Pablo Duran 25 yards from goal, and he took one touch to set himself up before volleying the ball goalwards. Although Owono managed to get a hand to the ball, he was unable to prevent Duran's third goal of the campaign from finding the back of the net. Alaves had a penalty claim turned down shortly after the restart, with Carl Starfelt's touch deemed questionable but not worthy of a spot-kick.

As the match drew to a close, Carlos Vicente's late shot arrowed wide, representing the closest either side came to snatching a winner. Ultimately, the 1-1 draw saw Alaves extend their winless run at home to four matches, their longest such streak since 2022. Meanwhile, Celta de Vigo continued their positive run against Alaves, having lost just one of their last nine meetings.
