Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany emphasized the need for a mental shift as the team prepares for the UEFA Champions League knockout stage. With a potential playoff match against Manchester City looming, Kompany stressed that Bayern must adapt their mentality to succeed in the high-pressure knockout games.

Bayern Munich concluded their league phase campaign with a 3-1 win over Slovan Bratislava on Wednesday. However, the victory was not enough to secure a top-eight finish, which would have granted them automatic qualification to the round of 16. Instead, Bayern will participate in the playoff round, where a challenging matchup against Manchester City awaits.

Vincent Kompany's Bayer Leverkusen will face either Manchester City or Celtic in the playoff round, with the draw set to take place on Friday. Kompany emphasized the importance of regaining momentum, saying, “Now we have to restore this energy to be hot for those games.” He acknowledged that their potential opponents will be feeling confident, adding, “Now City as well as Celtic enter these knockout matches with a good feeling and we need to have that as well.”

Manchester City secured their spot in the playoffs with a 3-1 win over Brugge. Kompany stressed that his team needs to shift their focus and build energy for the upcoming big games. He said, “We have to build our energy. We have to switch to the mentality of looking forward to these big games. You get to the stage of a competition where you expect big games.”

Despite defeating Slovan, Bayer Leverkusen missed out on automatic qualification due to a lack of goals. They conceded a late goal, finishing in 12th place. Kompany expressed a sense of tempered joy, saying, “Despite the win today, the joy is not the same. Today we did not have a lot of things in our control regarding the situation, but from tomorrow, we will have again.” He reiterated the need to refocus, adding, “We now have to switch the mentality to be fully energized for these games.”
