Everton's Relegation Fears Grow After Loss to Aston Villa
David Moyes' second spell at Everton began with a 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa, highlighting the scale of the task he faces to keep the Toffees in the Premier League.
David Moyes acknowledged the enormity of the challenge he faces to keep Everton in the Premier League, following a dispiriting 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa at Goodison Park on Wednesday. This match marked Moyes' first game in charge of Everton during his second spell at the club. Ollie Watkins' goal sealed the victory for Aston Villa, extending Everton's dismal run in front of goal.
The Toffees' defeat has heightened their relegation concerns, with the team now sitting just one point and two places above the relegation zone. Everton's barren streak in front of goal has been a major contributor to their struggles, with the team having scored only one goal in their last five games. This poor run of form ultimately led to the dismissal of Sean Dyche as Everton manager.
Moyes offered a candid assessment of the situation, stating, “I've got no illusions of the job I've to do. We couldn't score a goal tonight again.” This comment highlights the significant challenge Moyes faces in revitalizing Everton's attacking prowess and guiding the team to safety in the Premier League.
David Moyes emphasized the need for his team to showcase more quality on the ball and improve their overall performance. “We've got to show an awful lot more quality on the ball and play better with the ball,” he said. Moyes also stressed the importance of retaining possession, adding, “I've told the players that. We just didn't play well enough and didn't retain the ball as well as we should have done.”

Moyes had previously expressed his confidence in Dominic Calvert-Lewin's ability to score the goals necessary to get Everton out of trouble. However, the striker squandered a crucial opportunity to equalize in stoppage time, extending his goal drought since September. Moyes encouraged Calvert-Lewin to focus on getting into goalscoring positions, saying, “I've said to Dom to see if he can get himself in goalscoring positions. I think he can show everybody that he's a really hard-working centre-forward.” Moyes acknowledged Calvert-Lewin's missed chance, stating, “He had a pretty big miss at the end which was probably the big chance for him. Overall, we got our opportunities, they didn't get many at all either. We just didn't quite finish it.”

Unai Emery, Aston Villa's manager, expressed his satisfaction at securing an away win in the Premier League, ending a drought that dated back to October. “This victory is very important. We have started the year winning at home, in the Premier League and in the FA Cup. Away, we were in a bad spell and had to break it,” he said. Emery acknowledged the difficulty of winning at Goodison Park, stating, “To get three points here is very difficult and we're very happy.”
