David Raya Confident Arsenal Can Cope with Jesus' Injury Blow

Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya believes the team's collective mentality will help them cope with Gabriel Jesus' season-ending injury.

Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya believes his team can catch Premier League leaders Liverpool after reducing the gap to four points. Following their thrilling 2-1 comeback win against Tottenham, Raya expressed his optimism about Arsenal's title prospects. “Yes, of course. In football, everything can happen,” he said.

The Gunners' win over Tottenham was a timely boost, ending a three-game winless streak in all competitions. Arsenal had suffered frustrating defeats, including an FA Cup exit to Manchester United and a League Cup semi-final loss to Newcastle. However, Raya's team showed resilience, coming from behind to defeat Tottenham with goals from Dominic Solanke's own goal and Leandro Trossard's winner.

Despite Liverpool being title favorites with a game in hand, Raya remains hopeful that Arsenal can bridge the gap. “Three weeks ago, people were saying that Liverpool had the title in their hands. But it is just football and everything changes in two or three matches,” he noted. Raya emphasized the importance of focusing on their own games rather than worrying about Liverpool's position. “We have to focus on ourselves, try and win every game, and see where we are at the end of the season.”

Raya cautioned against looking too far ahead, stressing the need for Arsenal to stay focused on their present challenges. “We don't want to think too far ahead because that will play badly against us. We have to live in the present, that's the most important thing,” he said. By maintaining this mindset, Arsenal can continue to push for the title and capitalize on any opportunities that arise.

Arsenal forward Gabriel Jesus suffered a devastating anterior cruciate ligament injury on the eve of the north London derby, potentially ruling him out for the remainder of the season. This injury, combined with Bukayo Saka's absence due to hamstring surgery, has left Arsenal with limited attacking options.

Despite the injury setbacks, Arsenal goalkeeper David Raya believes the team's collective mentality will help them cope. “It was really, really important to come with a big, big mentality. We know how important the derby is, not just for the league, but for the people that follow us,” he said. Raya praised the team's character, particularly after going behind in the game. “We showed very big character throughout the game, especially when we went behind. We were a little bit stunned but after that, we dominated the whole first half.”

Raya was thrilled with the team's performance, which included two goals before halftime. “We got the rewards with two goals before half-time. I am very happy with the performance, for the lads, and for Gabriel Jesus, too. He has a massive injury. This win is for him,” Raya said, dedicating the victory to their injured teammate.

With the north London derby victory behind them, Arsenal now turn their attention to Saturday's match against Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium. Raya acknowledged the challenge ahead, saying, “We know how good Aston Villa are. We now just have to recover, train and be ready for Saturday because we know how tough it is going to be.” The Gunners will be seeking to avoid a repeat of last season's 2-0 home defeat to Unai Emery's Aston Villa.
