Bayern Munich Aims for Top-Eight Finish with Six Wins, Says Coach Kompany
Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany has set a target of six wins to secure a top-eight finish in the Champions League and avoid the playoff phase.
Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany has set his sights on securing a top-eight finish in the Champions League, and believes that six wins will be enough to achieve this goal. With two matches remaining, Kompany is targeting victories to book a spot in the next round. He said, “You cannot differentiate between small and big games. That is why this game tomorrow is for us of the highest priority.”
Kompany expressed his enthusiasm for the new Champions League format, which has introduced a league phase in place of the traditional group stage. He noted, “I had a lot of fun with this new format. No criticism of the new format but I don't look at the table.” Instead, Kompany is focusing on the number of wins required to secure a top-eight finish. He explained, “We know with six wins you are in the top eight. Three wins and you are in the playoff phase.” With this goal in mind, Bayern Munich will face Feyenoord on Wednesday, seeking a crucial victory in their pursuit of a top-eight finish.
Bayern Munich currently sits in 12th place with 12 points, and coach Vincent Kompany is aware that his team needs to accumulate more points to secure a top-eight finish and advance to the Round of 16. The top eight teams will qualify directly, while the next 16 teams will enter a playoff phase. Kompany's focus is on winning six games, which he believes will be enough to achieve their goal. He said, “All the teams have a different programme. My aim is to win six games.”
Kompany will have a nearly full-strength squad at his disposal, with several players returning from injury or illness. Jamal Musiala, who has made substitute appearances in the past two matches after recovering from illness, may be in line for a starting spot. When asked about Musiala's potential start, Kompany replied, “We will see tomorrow.” He was pleased to see his squad nearing full strength, noting, “Today it was important that we saw the squad filling up. Not all of the players have the same fitness level... but we have a team with a lot of experience.”
