Barcelona Coach Hansi Flick Seeks Win at Benfica in Champions League
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has downplayed his team's chances of winning the Champions League, focusing instead on their upcoming match against Benfica, where a win would be a significant step forward.
Barcelona coach Hansi Flick has downplayed his team's chances of winning the Champions League this year, instead focusing on their upcoming match against Benfica on Tuesday. Flick emphasized the importance of taking things one game at a time, rather than getting ahead of themselves. “The future will tell whether we are among the favourites or not,” he said during a press conference on Monday. “The Champions League is one of the most difficult competitions to win, but we have to try.”
Flick heaped praise on Liverpool, who currently top the Champions League table with a perfect 18 points. “When I look at Liverpool I see a team with incredible power. They are one of my favourite teams in the world right now,” he said. This admiration for Liverpool serves as a reminder of the high level of competition in the Champions League, and Flick is keenly aware that his team faces stiff competition on multiple fronts.
Barcelona is currently second in the Champions League table, but Flick is cautious about getting too far ahead of themselves. “We are doing well but there are very good teams that are also doing well and we are contending on three fronts (Champions League, LaLiga and Copa del Rey),” he noted. Instead, Flick is focusing on the task at hand, which is to secure a win against Benfica. "“Benfica is a team that plays very well, it's a pleasure to see how they build. Angel Di Maria is one of my favourite players. Let's see how we do tomorrow...”

Hansi Flick expressed his satisfaction with Barcelona's LaLiga performances, despite their recent poor run of results. He acknowledged that the team's results have not been ideal but emphasized that their overall play has been strong. “If you look at the LaLiga results, we are not doing a good job but if you look at our games we are playing very well,” Flick said.
Flick also drew on his past experiences, recalling his triumph in the 2020 Champions League final with Bayern Munich at Benfica's stadium. “I have great memories of this stadium,” he reminisced. This positive association with the stadium may provide an added motivation for Flick and his team as they prepare to face Benfica.

Despite being in his first season at Barcelona and in LaLiga, Flick remains focused on the task at hand. “As I said in Getafe, it's my first season here and in LaLiga. (I) had no experience and I didn't know how the opposition were going to play,” he explained. However, Flick is pleased with the team's overall performance and work ethic. “Despite the results, I would say that the team is playing great and working very focused.”

Looking ahead to the match against Benfica, Flick emphasized the importance of securing a win. “Our goal is to win against Benfica. It would be a big step for us and we want to do it,” he said. A victory would not only boost Barcelona's chances of advancing in the Champions League but also provide a crucial confidence boost. “In the position we're in, being second, it's important to secure these points. There are a lot of games left between now and the end of the season and we could save two games if we avoid the playoffs by finishing in the top eight.”
