AC Milan's Champions League Record Won't Win Games, Says Conceicao

AC Milan manager Sergio Conceicao is cautious with Christian Pulisic's fitness ahead of the Champions League match against Girona, while also calling for fan support to drive the team's success.

AC Milan boasts an impressive Champions League record, with seven titles, second only to Real Madrid's 15. However, manager Sergio Conceicao emphasized that this record will not guarantee success in their upcoming matches. Conceicao stressed that it is up to the players to deliver results, saying, “The jerseys don't play, the trophies on the pitch count for nothing. It's the players who go on the pitch. Not only in the Champions League, it applies to all trophies.”

Conceicao, who took over as manager last month, acknowledged the motivation that comes with competing in the Champions League. He noted, “I think every game is different. It's true that being in the best club competition in the world is always a huge motivation.” Despite their decent position in the Champions League standings, Milan is struggling to ensure their participation in the competition next season. Conceicao added, “Big teams like Milan have to work every year to be there. In the league we are working to have the right continuity to be there once again at the end of the year.”

Ahead of their home tie against Girona on Wednesday, Conceicao faces a dilemma regarding the fitness of Christian Pulisic, the club's top scorer with 10 goals. Pulisic missed the game against Juventus due to a muscle issue and is uncertain for the Girona match. Conceicao said, “Christian is staying with us, we have training tomorrow morning, let's see how it goes.” The manager is unlikely to risk Pulisic's fitness, given the importance of the upcoming matches.

Conceicao Prioritizes Pulisic's Fitness and Calls for Fan Support

Manager Sergio Conceicao has expressed caution regarding Christian Pulisic's fitness, indicating that he is unwilling to risk aggravating the player's muscle issue. Conceicao stated, “I don't want to risk losing him for a month or two months. He could be on the bench but it's better not to risk it.” This decision reflects Conceicao's prioritization of Pulisic's long-term fitness over the immediate need for his services.

Conceicao has also appealed to Milan supporters to rally behind the team, emphasizing the crucial role they play in the club's success. He said, “They have to support us, they have to be the 12th man, or rather, the first. Without them, the club does not exist.” Conceicao stressed the importance of fan support, adding, “Without the soul of the fans there is no club. I will do everything, the players will do everything, but we need their support.”

The upcoming match against Girona presents an opportunity for Milan to solidify their position in the Champions League standings. Girona currently sits 30th with three points and is battling to secure a spot in the knockout phase playoffs. A win for Milan would guarantee a playoff place, and they still have a chance to qualify automatically for the last 16.
