Ronaldo Backs Vinicius Junior for Ballon d'Or, Calls Rodri's Win 'Unfair'
Cristiano Ronaldo expressed disappointment over Vinicius Junior's Ballon d'Or snub, calling Rodri's win 'unfair'.
Cristiano Ronaldo, a five-time Ballon d'Or winner, expressed his disappointment and frustration on Friday regarding the outcome of this year's award. Ronaldo felt that Real Madrid's talented youngster, Vinicius Junior, was unfairly overlooked for the prestigious honor.
Ronaldo's comments came after Manchester City midfielder Rodri surprisingly took home the Ballon d'Or in October, with Vinicius Junior finishing as the runner-up. Ronaldo believed that Vinicius Junior was more deserving of the award, citing the Brazilian's exceptional performances throughout the year.
Rodri played a crucial role in Manchester City's fourth consecutive Premier League title and Spain's triumph in Euro 2024. Meanwhile, Vinicius Junior was instrumental in guiding Real Madrid to a record-extending 15th Champions League title.
The 2024 Ballon d'Or ceremony in Paris was marred by controversy, with Real Madrid boycotting the event in support of Vinicius Junior. Cristiano Ronaldo, a former Madrid attacker and five-time Ballon d'Or winner, publicly expressed his disagreement with the outcome. “In my opinion, he deserved to win the golden ball. It was unfair, I say it here in front of everybody,” Ronaldo stated at the Global Soccer Awards ceremony.
Ronaldo acknowledged Rodri's accomplishments but firmly believed that Vinicius Junior was the more deserving candidate. “They gave it to Rodri, he deserved it too, but I think they should have given it to Vinicius because he won a Champions League,” the Portugal captain added, reiterating his support for Vinicius Junior.
Cristiano Ronaldo's impressive tally of five Ballon d'Or wins is surpassed by only one player: Argentina's legendary Lionel Messi, who has claimed the award six times.
The prestigious Ballon d'Or winner is selected by an international panel of 100 specialized journalists, who choose from a pre-determined shortlist of candidates.
