Italian football legend Fabio Cannavaro has been confirmed as the new head coach of Croatian club Dinamo Zagreb. The 51-year-old former defender, who led Italy to World Cup victory in 2006 and received the Ballon d'Or award, brings his wealth of experience to the role.
Cannavaro's appointment marks his return to management after a brief stint with Udinese earlier in the year. During his time with the Italian club, Cannavaro led the team for only six matches before parting ways. He will now look to make a lasting impact at Dinamo Zagreb, one of Croatia's most successful and storied clubs.
Fabio Cannavaro's managerial experience extends beyond his brief stint with Udinese, having previously taken on caretaker roles with China's national team and Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia.
Dinamo Zagreb expressed their enthusiasm for Cannavaro's appointment, highlighting his exceptional qualities as a candidate. “His charisma, championship pedigree, and hunger for success make him the ideal candidate. He knows the team, the league, and the challenges ahead,” the club stated, emphasizing Cannavaro's unique blend of experience, expertise, and ambition.
Fabio Cannavaro's appointment as the new head coach of Dinamo Zagreb comes after the dismissal of Nenad Bjelica, whose tenure was cut short due to underwhelming results in the Croatian Football League. Despite being third in the league standings, Dinamo Zagreb found themselves seven points adrift of leaders Rijeka, prompting the need for a change in leadership.
Cannavaro is set to take the reins of the team after the New Year, with his inaugural match scheduled for January 22nd against Arsenal in the Champions League group stage. Dinamo Zagreb currently occupies the 24th spot, the last position in the playoff section, making Cannavaro's debut a crucial one in determining the team's fate in the competition.
