Roma settle for disappointing 1-1 draw against Union Saint-Gilloise in Europa League.
Roma's Europa League woes continued as they settled for a disappointing draw against Union Saint-Gilloise, with Gianluca Mancini's header cancelled out by Mile Svilar's costly mistake.
Roma's lineup was depleted, missing Evan Ndicka due to illness and Mario Hermoso and Alexis Saelemaekers. Despite this, Mats Hummels didn't receive his first start. Union Saint-Gilloise, Belgian Cup and Super Cup winners, were also hampered by injuries to Guillaume Francois, Lazare Amani, Casper Terho, Promise David, Alessio Castro-Montes, and Henok Teklab.
Manager Ivan Juric faced increasing pressure after securing just four points from three European games and suffering two defeats in Roma's last three Serie A matches.
The match began with Union Saint-Gilloise's Anan Khalaili narrowly missing the target in the 2nd minute. Roma's Eldor Shomurodov was later flagged offside. Tommaso Baldanzi tested the goalkeeper, while Ross Sykes' free kick went wide.
In the first half, Gianluca Mancini clashed with Machida, but the referee deemed it incidental contact. Lorenzo Pellegrini's volley was saved, and Mile Svilar denied Ousseynou Niang's angled drive.
After halftime, Union Saint-Gilloise's Vanhoutte's chest-and-volley attempt was easily saved. Eldor Shomurodov then squandered a free header from Pellegrini's cross.
The match's most compelling opportunity arose in the 52nd minute when Tommaso Baldanzi's exquisite left-footed curler from the edge of the area struck the far post.
Roma finally broke through on 65 minutes. Artem Dovbyk's angled drive earned a corner upon his introduction, and Lorenzo Pellegrini's subsequent cross found Gianluca Mancini, who headed home from six yards.
However, Union SG equalized through Kevin Mac Allister's header from Vanhoutte's corner at the back post. Mile Svilar's slip proved costly. Mac Allister, brother of Liverpool's Alexis Mac Allister, capitalized.
Union SG pressed for a winner. Kevin Rodriguez's shot went wide, while Sofiane Boufal's header was off-target. Boufal later tested Svilar directly.
In stoppage time, Roma endured a tense moment. Ross Sykes' shot was blocked by Zeki Celik, and Mile Svilar parried Anouar Ait El Hadj's rebound.
