Governor Seyi Makinde Approves N80,000 Minimum Wage for Oyo State Workers
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has approved a minimum wage of N80,000 for civil servants in the state. This development was announced by Dotun Oyelade, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, in Ibadan on Wednesday.
According to Oyelade, the Technical Committee, comprising government and labor officials, recommended the new salary scale, which has been approved by Governor Makinde. The commissioner stated, “This new scale will be implemented as soon as the consequential adjustments process is completed by the committee.”
Oyelade also highlighted Oyo State's impressive employment statistics, citing the National Bureau of Statistics' latest report, which ranked the state as the most worker-friendly in Southern Nigeria. This recognition follows a significant decline in unemployment rates due to mass employment in various sectors.
“The Oyo State Government has been paying workers' salaries on the 25th of every month since Governor Makinde took office in 2019,” the commissioner noted.
“The governor began paying the previous N30,000 minimum wage from the start of his tenure over four years ago, including consistent payments of pensions, gratuities, and a 13th-month salary for both workers and pensioners alike.
“Since November 2023, Governor Makinde has been paying N25,000 to workers and N15,000 to pensioners as a welfare wage award. The Makinde administration introduced the wage award to cushion the effects of the Federal Government's fuel subsidy removal and has remained consistent with these payments for over a year, even to this day.”
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has cleared the backlog of gratuities owed to pensioners from 2008 to 2015, Commissioner Dotun Oyelade announced. This move includes increased gratuity payments for pensioners under the Local Government Staff Pensions Board and the Ministry of Establishment and Training.
