Auxerre stuns Marseille with three-goal victory at Stade Vélodrome, intensifying pressure on De Zerbi.

Marseille's struggles continued as they suffered their second consecutive French league defeat at home, falling 3-1 to Auxerre at the Stade Vélodrome on Friday.

The team's dismal performance was met with disdain from the home crowd, who subjected Roberto de Zerbi's squad to a chorus of boos and jeers. Some Auxerre players, including Adrien Rabiot's opponents, showed empathy towards the Marseille midfielder, attempting to console him amidst the hostile atmosphere.

Marseille's loss was a significant setback, as they aimed to maintain pressure on league leaders Paris Saint-Germain following their 3-0 defeat in their previous home game.

Auxerre struck early, capitalizing on Lilian Brassier's defensive error in the 10th minute. Lassine Sinayoko seized the opportunity, scoring his second goal in as many games for the visitors.

The first half woes continued for Marseille as Gaëtan Perrin and Hamed Junior Traoré scored two goals in three minutes, leaving the hosts reeling.

Marseille attempted to mount a comeback in the second half, but Auxerre continued to dictate the pace, creating scoring opportunities of their own.

The momentum shifted briefly in Marseille's favor when Clement Akpa was called for handball, awarding the hosts a penalty. Mason Greenwood capitalized on the chance, converting the spot kick in the 65th minute.

However, the goal merely halted Auxerre's momentum temporarily, as the visitors' resilient defense, depleted by injuries to key players, successfully contained Marseille's attack for the remainder.

Despite being understrength, Auxerre's backline held firm, denying Marseille any further scoring opportunities and securing a valuable 3-1 victory.

With Marseille's loss, the focus shifts to Saturday's matchup between Paris Saint-Germain and Angers, where PSG will aim to further solidify their lead atop the Ligue 1 standings.
