Atletico Madrid staged a late comeback to win 2-1 against Deportivo Alaves, capping off Diego Simeone's 700th game in charge.

Alexander Sorloth scored the 86th-minute winner, sealing the victory for Atletico.

Atletico trailed early after Javi Galan's handball led to a penalty, which Jon Guridi converted in the seventh minute, beating Jan Oblak.

Atletico Madrid equalized in the 76th minute when Antoine Griezmann converted a penalty, awarded after Abdel Abqar's handball from Alexander Sorloth's header.

The match seemed destined for a draw, but Rodrigo De Paul's pass found Sorloth, who scored the winner at the near post four minutes from time.

Atletico's victory propelled them to second place in LaLiga, while Alaves remain 16th with 13 points from 14 matches.

Diego Simeone made history as the first coach to manage 700 matches with the same LaLiga club, Atletico Madrid, a position he has held since 2011.

Simeone's impressive tenure has yielded numerous accolades, including two LaLiga titles (2014 and 2021) and two Europa League victories (2012 and 2018). He has also led Atletico to two Champions League finals.

Simeone's teams are renowned for their solid defensive foundations, and this season is no exception. Atletico has conceded a mere seven goals in LaLiga, the lowest tally of any team, and their best defensive record after 13 games since the 2020-21 season, when they won the title.
