Tottenham defeats Ferencvaros 2-1 in Europa League. Pape Sarr and Brennan Johnson score in youthful Spurs' victory.
Tottenham Hotspur's youthful side secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Ferencvaros in Budapest, maintaining their perfect start to the Europa League campaign. Manager Ange Postecoglou handed starts to four teenagers, including debutant Will Lankshear, and they did not disappoint.
Pape Sarr opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, capitalizing on Mikey Moore's impressive run down the right flank. Brennan Johnson sealed the win with his fifth goal in five games, collecting Moore's pass and shooting low past the goalkeeper.
Ferencvaros pushed for an equalizer, but Kady Borges and Cebrail Makreckis wasted promising opportunities. Barnabas Varga pulled one back for the hosts in the 90th minute, but it was too little, too late.
Postecoglou praised his young players, saying, “Mikey was outstanding. It's brilliant for a 17-year-old to play 90-plus minutes in a European away tie.” Tottenham now has six points from six and will host AZ Alkmaar on October 24.
