Lagos Task Force Takes Action: Hosting Events on Public Roads Now Criminal Offense; Residents Urged to Use Designated Centers

The Lagos State Task Force has issued a stern warning to residents against hosting events on public roads, citing disruptions to traffic and inconvenience to other road users. This move aims to maintain sanity and order in the Lagos metropolis.

Key Areas Affected

  • Lagos Island: Known for its vibrant social scene, residents are advised to seek alternative venues for events.
  • Oworonshoki: Authorities will closely monitor events in this area to prevent road closures.
  • Agege: Residents are urged to use private or government-owned facilities for social gatherings.

Consequences of Non-Compliance

• Arrest and prosecution for individuals found hosting events on public roads without permission.

• Disruption of events and potential confiscation of equipment.

Alternative Solutions

• Use private or government-owned facilities for social events.

• Obtain necessary permits from authorities before hosting events.

Lagos State Task Force is taking a strong stance against hosting events on public roads. According to Tokunbo Wahab, “The suspects will be tried in court according to the laws of the state. Lagos will not permit disregard for regulations.” This warning comes after recent incidents, including the arrest of five individuals who blocked Raymond Njoku Road in Ikoyi for a birthday party.

Task Force spokesperson Raheem Gbadeyan emphasized that offenders will face prosecution, stating that the agency will take action against those who disrupt public spaces. Chairman Adetayo Akerele also expressed concerns about the rise in road parties, saying “It is unacceptable for individuals or groups to use public roads for personal events, causing inconvenience and endangering public safety.”

Specific Areas Affected

Lawani Street in Yaba and Ganiyu Lamina Street in Ijaye Ojokoro have been identified as hotspots for these disruptions. To address this issue, the Task Force encourages residents to use designated event centers.

Reporting Incidents

The Task Force has launched a “See Something, Say Something” initiative, enabling citizens to report road obstructions. By working together, Lagos aims to maintain public safety and order.

The agency emphasized that it will take legal action against individuals who continue to violate state laws prohibiting road blockages for events.

Chairman of the Lagos State Task Force, CSP Shola Jejeloye, condemned the practice, describing it as “selfish and inconsiderate.” He noted that areas like Lagos Island, Oworonshoki, and Agege are prone to such illegal activities.
