A Polish radio station makes history by replacing human hosts with AI anchors.

Poland's OFF Radio Krakow made headlines on October 22 by replacing its human journalists with AI-generated presenters, sparking intense debate about the media and journalism's future.

Located in Krakow, southern Poland, the radio station unveiled its innovative relaunch, billing itself as Poland's first experiment with AI-driven virtual anchors assuming traditional journalism roles.

According to station director Marcin Pulit, this bold move aims to engage younger listeners on culturally relevant, artistic, and social issues, including LGBTQ+ concerns, revitalizing the station's connection with the next generation.

A letter penned by Demski, a journalist who was let go from OFF Radio Krakow in August, swiftly gained traction, amassing over 15,000 signatures on a petition by Wednesday, October 23. Moreover, Demski received hundreds of calls from concerned individuals, predominantly young people, who were hesitant to participate in this experiment.

Demski, who joined the station in February 2022, expressed disappointment, particularly considering the station's public funding. This sentiment was echoed by many who were troubled by the sudden replacement of human journalists with AI-generated presenters.

Despite the backlash, OFF Radio Krakow's director, Marcin Pulit, defended the decision, attributing the layoffs to the station's dwindling listenership, which he described as “close to zero.” Pulit insisted that the introduction of AI presenters was not the cause of the layoffs, but rather a strategic response to the station's declining audience.

Krzysztof Gawkowski, Poland's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Digital Affairs, weighed in on the controversy surrounding OFF Radio Krakow's AI-generated presenters, expressing concerns about the unregulated growth of AI in media. Gawkowski emphasized that while he supports AI development, certain boundaries must be respected, stating, “The widespread use of AI must be done for people, not against them!”

The radio station further ignited the controversy on October 22 by airing an interview conducted by an AI-generated host mimicking the voice of Wisława Szymborska, the renowned Polish poet and Nobel laureate. This move likely heightened concerns about AI's potential impact on authenticity and intellectual property in media.
