Cyprus police dismantle Nigerian prostitution ring, arresting three women and searching for two men. Authorities crack down on human trafficking.

Three women have been arrested in Cyprus for allegedly running a Nigerian prostitution ring in Limassol. The police spokesperson, Christos Andreou, confirmed the arrests, which were made possible through a joint operation with the anti-trafficking unit.

The investigation began last year when a woman filed a complaint, initially claiming to be a victim of theft. However, during questioning, suspicions arose that she was a victim of sex trafficking. The police gathered substantial evidence, leading to the arrest of a 44-year-old woman on October 9, followed by another arrest on October 18, and a third woman, aged 33, on Tuesday.

Two men are still wanted in connection with the case. The authorities have relocated the victim to a safe house and expect to bring the case to court in the coming days. This operation is a significant step in combating human trafficking and prostitution rings in Cyprus.

Cyprus Police spokesperson, Andreou, revealed that a sex trafficking case unfolded after a woman reported a theft in 2023. During questioning, authorities suspected sex trafficking.

“We initially had a complaint about theft, but suspicions arose that she was a victim of sex trafficking,” Andreou explained. “Upon further investigation, this was confirmed, and the woman was relocated to a safe house.”

The investigation progressed slowly due to limited information about the abusers' identities.

“The investigation took time because the victim didn't have much information about her abusers,” Andreou noted.

Arrests were made:

  • October 9: 44-year-old woman
  • October 18: Second arrest
  • Tuesday: 33-year-old woman

The suspects' identities remain undisclosed. Andreou confirmed that two men are still at large.

“We have gathered substantial evidence and expect to bring the case to court soon,” Andreou stated.
