Devastating fire hits Ilorin, Kwara State - commercial building destroyed, firefighters contain damage.



A devastating fire ravaged a commercial building in Ilorin, Kwara State's capital, on Thursday, October 17. The blaze destroyed a structure comprising four rooms and 23 shops, located along Onimamayin Street in the Agbo-Oba Taiwo Oke area.


Thanks to the swift intervention of firefighters, the building was saved from total destruction. According to Hassan Adekunle, spokesperson for the Kwara State Fire Service, the timely response of emergency services mitigated the damage.

“Only nine shops were affected by the inferno. Unfortunately, a provision store and several industrial sewing machines were lost in the incident.


“Preliminary investigations revealed that the fire was caused by a power surge,” the statement added.


Prince John Falade Olumuyiwa, Director of the Fire Service, has reached out to the victims of the recent fire incident, offering his heartfelt sympathy and prayers for the restoration of their losses. He emphasized the importance of remaining vigilant and safety-conscious to prevent such incidents in the future.


To minimize the risk of fires, Olumuyiwa advised the public to take simple yet crucial precautions. These include unplugging all electrical appliances when not in use, being mindful of potential fire hazards, and adhering to safety guidelines provided by the Fire Service during sensitization lectures.
