40 Killed as Insurgents Storm Chad Military Base
“The attack tragically left about 40 people dead.”
Chad suffers devastating terrorist attack: 40 fatalities reported at military base. Learn more about the insurgency.
Tragedy struck in Chad on Sunday, October 27, as Boko Haram, a notorious jihadist group, launched a devastating attack on a military unit, resulting in the loss of at least 40 soldiers and leaving many others injured. The extremist organization targeted a strategic military base in the Lake region of Chad, near the Nigerian border.
According to President Idriss Deby, “a garrison housing more than 200 soldiers was targeted by members of Boko Haram in the western region of Chad late Sunday night. The attack tragically left about 40 people dead.” This brazen assault is the latest in a series of attacks by Boko Haram, which has been wreaking havoc in the region since 2009.
The Boko Haram insurgency, which originated in northeast Nigeria, has had catastrophic consequences, with estimated death tolls exceeding 350,000 people and millions displaced from their homes. The group's reach has extended beyond Nigeria, affecting neighboring countries, including Chad, Cameroon, and Niger.
Chad has been actively combating Boko Haram, with President Deby leading the charge. In 2020, the Chadian military launched Operation Bohoma's Wrath, a successful campaign that neutralized hundreds of militants and destroyed their bases. However, the latest attack highlights the ongoing threat posed by Boko Haram and the need for sustained regional cooperation to combat this menace.
