Niger State boat accident - 25 dead, 125 missing after vessel capsizes en route to Mawlid celebration.




A devastating boat accident occurred on October 1 in Gbajibo, Mokwa Local Government Area, claiming 25 lives. The vessel, carrying over 200 passengers to the Mawlid celebration, capsized.


According to Abdullahi Baba-Arah, Director-General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), rescue efforts have been ongoing. In a statement released on October 2, Baba-Arah revealed:

  • Initial recovery efforts yielded nine bodies.
  • A subsequent operation recovered an additional 16 bodies, bringing the total fatalities to 25.
  • The victims comprise four females and 21 males.

The search for 125 missing passengers continues.


200+ passengers to Gbajibo's Mawlid celebration capsized. NSEMA's Director-General, Abdullahi Baba-Arah, reported:


Search party continues to look for 125 passengers still missing,” NSEMA Director General.


“16 corpses have been recovered so far, made up of two females and 14 males,” the statement reads.


“NSEMA is leading the search-and-rescue operations in collaboration with the State Ministry of Transport, the Mokwa Local Government Emergency Committee, local divers, and community volunteers.


“The rescue efforts continue, as the state mourns the loss of those who perished in the tragic accident.”
