Lionel Messi's return to Inter Miami delayed due to injury setback and flu symptoms, expected to feature in clash against Atlanta United on September 19.
Since leading Argentina to victory in the Copa America 2024 final against Colombia in July, Lionel Messi has been sidelined. However, the superstar recently resumed training with Inter Miami and is nearing a highly anticipated return to action.
Lionel Messi's eagerly awaited return to action has hit a snag, as the Inter Miami forward suffered an injury setback and was noticeably absent from the team's training session on Wednesday, casting doubt on his availability for this weekend's clash with Philadelphia Union.
Lionel Messi, who initially suffered an ankle ligament injury during the Copa America final, has not experienced any further complications with his ankle. However, he is currently battling flu-like symptoms, according to Gaston Edul. Despite this setback, Messi is expected to make a return to the pitch on September 19, when Inter Miami takes on Atlanta United.
Lionel Messi's last outing for Inter Miami was in June, when he netted in a thrilling 3-3 stalemate against St Louis City. Interestingly, his absence has not hindered the team's success, as they have gone on to win eight of their nine subsequent matches without him.
In August, Inter Miami head coach Tata Martino provided an update on Lionel Messi's recovery, stating in a media briefing that, “He is developing well, it was foreseeable that he would not be with Argentina because he is not yet in a position to play, but we continue to see him develop. There is no estimate, because you are already starting to see how you feel as you add training on the field.”
“The work is planned by the medical part with the physical trainers. But yes, he returns before the end of the regular season.”
“I wouldn't be able to give an approximate number of days that he returns to training but it is not a situation that is too far away. There is a part of the injuries that have to do with the physical and there is a part of the injuries that has to do with the mental, so we have to overcome them both ways and I think that he is going through that process.
“He is feeling better and better, he has been working in the field for three or four days now. We cannot give time because we do not know and it would be speculating about something that may not be possible to do, but it is close,” he added.
