The Department of State Services (DSS) announced on Monday that it has arrested several tailors in Kano who were producing Russian flags for use by protesters demanding better governance. The DSS operatives also took into custody the individuals who commissioned the tailors to sew the flags.
The DSS stated that it is continuing to investigate the matter, and clarified that Adaramoye Michael, the national coordinator of the Youth Rights Campaign (YRC), is not in their custody, contrary to reports.
“The DSS can confirm that Adaramoye Michael (aka Michael Lenin) is not in its custody. Meanwhile, the Service has apprehended some tailors in Kano State responsible for making Russian flags being distributed in the area,” the DSS said in the statement.
“Some of their sponsors have also been picked.”
A nationwide protest against hunger and economic hardship kicked off in Nigeria on Thursday, with demonstrators taking to the streets across the country. In Kano, some protesters were seen waving Russian flags, sparking controversy.
The protesters in Kano were heard calling on Russian President Vladimir Putin to intervene in Nigeria's situation, but the Russian government has swiftly denied any involvement in the protests or the flag-waving. Meanwhile, the Nigerian military has warned that those responsible for waving the Russian flags could face treason charges.
