Oscar 2024: NOSC Invites Entries for 97th Academy Awards
Oscars expand Nigerian representation with 5 new members...
Nigeria's Official Selection Committee (NOSC) expands membership, seeks Oscar breakthrough in International Feature Film category, and opens submission portal for 97th Academy Awards.
The Nigerian Official Selection Committee (NOSC) for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has expanded its membership by admitting five new members, aiming to enhance its capacity and achieve its goals.
The Nigerian Official Selection Committee (NOSC) has welcomed five new members, including Ali Nuhu, Managing Director of the Nigerian Film Corporation; Blessing Effiom Egbe, a film producer and director; actress Ijeoma Grace Agu; Kene Okwuosa, Co-Founder and Group CEO of Filmhouse Cinemas; and Victor Akande, a journalist, author, and film critic.
According to NOSC Chairperson, actress Stephanie Linus, the new members bring diverse creative expertise, enriching the selection process for Nigeria's representative in the International Feature Film category. The committee is responsible for collecting, screening, and voting on entries to determine the country's submission to the Academy Awards.
The Nigerian Official Selection Committee (NOSC), accredited by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), is tasked with selecting Nigeria's official entry for the prestigious International Feature Film (IFF) Award.
The IFF Award, presented annually by the Academy, honors a feature-length motion picture produced outside the United States, with at least 50% of its dialogue in a language other than English. To be eligible, submitted films must meet specific criteria, including accurate English subtitles, adherence to designated shooting formats, and proof of theatrical release - detailed guidelines are available on the NOSC website.
Nigeria has yet to break through to the IFF award shortlist despite past attempts. However, with Stephanie Linus now at the helm of the NOSC, there is renewed optimism for a successful entry, particularly after the committee has overcome previous controversies.
The submission portal for Nigerian filmmakers will be open from August 1, 2024, to August 30, 2024, on the NOSC website. The selected film will represent Nigeria at the 97th Oscars ceremony, scheduled for March 2, 2025, which will be broadcast live from the iconic Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles, to a global audience spanning over 200 territories.
