Nigerian lawyers, including 86 advocates and one academic, have been elevated to the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), recognizing their exceptional contributions to the legal profession.

The Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee (LPPC), chaired by Chief Justice of Nigeria Olukayode Ariwoola, has elevated 87 legal practitioners to the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).

The announcement was made during the LPPC's 164th plenary session on August 1. This esteemed promotion recognizes exceptional skill and dedication in the Nigerian legal profession, honoring distinguished lawyers who excel as advocates and academics.

Hajo Sarki Bello, Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court of Nigeria and LPPC Secretary, announced the promotion, highlighting the high standards achieved by the new SAN appointees.

“The rank of SAN is not just a title; it is a mark of excellence, a recognition of outstanding contributions to the legal field,” said Bello.

“These 87 individuals have demonstrated remarkable expertise and dedication, making them worthy of this prestigious honour.”

The LPPC also considered five complaints filed against certain applicants, but after thorough review, found no substance to the allegations and subsequently dismissed them.

“The Committee thoroughly investigated these petitions and determined that they did not substantiate any claims that would disqualify the applicants,” Bello explained.

The investiture of the new Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs) is scheduled to take place on Monday, September 30, 2024, in a ceremonial swearing-in event.

A total of 87 distinguished individuals have been conferred with the prestigious SAN title, comprising 86 accomplished advocates and one esteemed academic. The list of advocate appointees is presented in order of seniority at the bar.

This recognition not only honors their individual excellence but also enhances the prestige and integrity of the legal profession in Nigeria.

With their elevation to the rank of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN), these distinguished lawyers are now expected to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, integrity, and excellence, serving as inspirations and mentors to their colleagues and the upcoming generation of legal practitioners.

In a previous development, the Legal Practitioners Privileges Committee (LPPC) had shortlisted 98 exceptional lawyers for consideration for the prestigious SAN rank in July, paving the way for the eventual selection of the 87 successful applicants announced recently.
