Govt on Notice: #EndBadGovernance Protest Resumes Oct 1
Protesters give Govt Oct 1 deadline to address demands...
Nigerian protesters threaten to relaunch #EndBadGovernance protests on October 1 if President Bola Tinubu's administration fails to address demands, including fuel subsidy reinstatement, economic reforms, and anti-corruption measures, despite the President's call for dialogue and calm.
A lawyer, JP, has issued a stern warning that the #EndBadGovernance protests will relaunch on October 1, 2024, Nigeria's Independence Day, if President Bola Tinubu's administration fails to meet the protesters' demands.
Speaking on Sunday at the Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park in Ojota, Lagos, JP emphasized that the protesters' grievances must be addressed, or else they will take to the streets again on October 1 to continue their agitation for good governance.
The lawyer said, “The president has spoken and we should listen to the president first and see what action the president is going to take.
“If the president says he is going to reduce the fuel pump price, he will tell us. If he says the price of foodstuffs will reduce, he will tell us; but not us trying to...
“Since the president has spoken this morning, let us wait. When it is 1 October and he has not implemented what he said he was going to do, we will carry out the protests again.”
The protesters have outlined a list of key demands, including the reinstatement of petrol subsidies and a review of the foreign exchange regime. They are also calling for urgent action to address pressing issues such as food scarcity, rampant unemployment, and the extravagant spending habits of those in power.
Additionally, the protesters are demanding a reduction in the size of the President's cabinet and a decrease in the overall cost of governance. They are also seeking immediate and robust reforms of critical institutions, including the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), with a renewed commitment to holding corrupt politicians accountable.
In a televised national address on Sunday at 7 am, President Bola Tinubu appealed for calm and urged protesters to engage in dialogue, calling for an immediate halt to the demonstrations that have swept the country since Thursday, in an effort to ease the escalating tensions.
