Abuja Protests: Security Operatives Fire on Crowds, Journalists

Violence erupts in Abuja as security forces shoot at protesters...

Security forces in Abuja violently dispersed protesters and journalists, firing live ammunition and tear gas. Masked SSS personnel in black uniforms arrived in Toyota Sienna vans and opened fire on peaceful demonstrators at the MKO Abiola Stadium.

Heavily armed police officers at the stadium's entrance had earlier fired tear gas, leading to chaos, harassment, and arrests of several protesters. The sudden escalation of force by security forces turned a peaceful protest into a volatile situation.

On Saturday, August 3, at around noon, a masked SSS official approached journalists covering the protests and opened fire, shooting directly at them.

The bullets hit a Sienna van, rattling the windscreen, and struck the trunk of the vehicle carrying PREMIUM TIMES correspondents, who were assigned to cover the protests, with three bullets.
