Tinubu Welcomes Supreme Court's Decision on LGS Rights
Tinubu Welcomes Supreme Court Ruling on Local Government Rights, Pledges to Strengthen Grassroots Governance and Ensure Accountability.
Bola Tinubu, the president, has stated that he agrees with the Supreme Court's ruling preserving local governments' financial independence.
Tinubu's opinions were expressed by presidential spokesperson Ajuri Ngelale in a statement on Wednesday, July 11.
According to Tinubu, the ruling upheld the Nigerian Constitution's spirit, intent, and purpose with regard to local governments' statutory rights.
He emphasized that the lack of governance at this critical grassroots level has made inefficient local government management a significant barrier to the country's advancement.
The President emphasized that local council leaders now have an obligation to make sure that residents receive efficient, customer-focused service delivery.
“The Renewed Hope Agenda is about the people of this country, at all levels, irrespective of faith, tribe, gender, political affiliation, or any other artificial line they say exists between us. This country belongs to all of us. By virtue of this judgement, our people especially the poor will be able to hold their local leaders to account for their actions and inactions. What is sent to local government accounts will be known, and services must now be provided without excuses.
“My administration instituted this suit because of our unwavering belief that our people must have relief and today's judgement will ensure that it will be only those local officials elected by the people that will control the resources of the people. This judgement stands as a resounding affirmation that we can use legitimate means of redress to restructure our country and restructure our economy to make Nigeria a better place to live in and a fairer society for all of our people,” Tinubu stated.
President Tinubu that the weakening of local governments has resulted in a decline in vital services like street lighting, drainage systems, parks, gardens, open spaces, and community security.
He reiterated that attempts to enhance Nigeria's federal structure for national development are strengthened by the Supreme Court's historically significant ruling to preserve local governments' financial autonomy and other constitutional rights.
President Tinubu commended Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, for his commitment and patriotic work on this issue.
He stressed that in order to create a successful and efficient governance system that serves all Nigerians, his administration is dedicated to safeguarding the values guiding citizens, government institutions, and all levels of government.
