Spacebound, first civilian to reach for the stars...
Nigeria announces plans to send its first citizen to space, marking a significant milestone in the country's space exploration journey.
The Nigerian government is set to make history by sending its first citizen to space, announced Dr. Mathew Adepoju, Director General of National Space Research and Development Agency (NASDRA), in Abuja on Wednesday, June 19.
A Memorandum of Understanding has been signed between NASDRA and The Space Exploration and Research Agency, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria's 25-year space exploration journey. This collaboration opens up new opportunities for scientific research and technological advancement.
NASDRA, Nigeria's national space agency, operates under the Federal Ministry of Innovation, Science and Technology. Headquartered in Abuja, the agency has a ground receiving station and other facilities, despite struggling with funding and infrastructure challenges.
Despite these challenges, NASDRA is one of Africa's most advanced space agencies, boasting four satellites and ambitious goals. Its satellites have received praise for their high-resolution images. The agency also hosts one of UN-SPIDER'S Regional Support Offices in Africa.
